Chocobos! Catching, Breeding, Statistics.
How do I start? The first stage is to catch a chocobo! Or, if you’re a Cavalier you get an chocobo automatically, but we’ll get to that later. Chocobos can be found in various locations all across Vaikuntha, and some breeds even have different colored plumage and special adaptations to their environment. The most common of these are yellow chocobos which can be found almost anywhere, but don’t necessarily have any special attributes. The others will be explained as the guide continues. To catch a chocobo one must find a chocobo, and each breed has a different rarity and a different habitat. Once a chocobo is found in its natural habitat, the trick then is engaging it in battle. But a chocobo rarely allows itself to be battled alone, and so the party/character must first kill off the chocobo’s monster teammates to get the chocobo alone. Chances are, after a battle, the chocobo in question might not want to stick around and will instead flee. Each breed has a different flee probability, and unfortunately most chocobos will flee rather than stay. This probability can be cut down, however, with gysahl greens, which can help convince the chocobo to remain on the field and allow the character to capture it. Gysahl greens may be purchased from most farms and markets for a minimal fee. What makes the different breeds of chocobos so special? Aside from color? Chocobos found in different climates have different adaptations to those climates, and each breed has a different range of stats when caught from the wild. ![]() Yellow Chocobos are by far the most common and are average in almost every way. They can be found roaming most plains and grasslands. Sometimes people like to dye their feathers to make them appear to be another breed, but they gain no advantage from this color change. Blue Chocobos can be found around lakes, rivers, and marshlands, most notably the Lydeet Plains and the Nashee Archipelago. They are exceptionally strong swimmers, frequently seen enjoying themselves in deep or fast waters, though they strongly dislike swimming in the ocean. Because of their love of water, they loathe being in dry climates and are very susceptible to dehydration. These are also said to be the smartest of chocobos. Green Chocobos evolved to be found in more rugged terrain, and are specifically found camouflaged in the forests of the Myste Aura mountains. Evolution blessed them with an uncanny ability of sure footing on steep trails and mountainsides, much as earth mountain goats do. They are very sturdy and can carry a heavy load, but these birds were not built for speed. They also have a great sense of smell and sometimes find otherwise hidden sources of food. Brown Chocobos adapted to live in the arid Neg’gi Desert.Their broad feet help them run atop the sands without a loss of speed or stamina, and they never seem bothered by the heat or harsh desert sun. Part of this is the ability to sense water sources from miles away, something that has saved many a lost traveller in the past. A brown chocobo will never be found swimming, however, and if they should find themselves in a cold climate they will succumb to hypothermia faster than any other chocobo. These are, sadly, the dumbest of chocobos on average, but what they lack in smarts they make up for in stamina. White Chocobos are exclusive to the frozen tundras of the Northern Expanse, if you can find them. Even if they are found, these birds are extremely skittish and have the speed to escape almost any threat, not to mention their wide feet help them run atop the snow. One of their main defenses is running top speed into the frozen wasteland and hoping their pursuer is smart enough to give up and avoid hypothermia and frostbite, as these chocobos are rarely susceptible to it and can outlast most freezing conditions. However, get one of these chocobos into a hot climate and they will be the first to faint from heat stroke. Black Chocobos are the jacks of all trades. They’re very fast, good swimmers, hardy to the elements, and are decent endurance runners. These are also the most aggressive breed of chocobo and are very strong fighters, which is likely why they thrive in an otherwise dangerous place such as the Twilight Frontier. Luckily, there are very few black chocobos in the world. Even if you don’t mess with them, they may choose to mess with you, however. These mischievous birds had been known to sneak into camps and settlements to steal objects they find interesting for their hoard. It is said that someone who has the affection of a black chocobo might find themselves with gifts from said hoard from time to time. Though, watch out should your chocobo decide to steal from a neighbor and give the prized item to you. When you suggest a chocobo is particularly good at something, is there a stat involved? And what do the stats mean in the long run? The stats only come in to play if you are a) racing your chocobos, or b) breeding them to try to get a gold chocobo. Otherwise if you’re just here to have fun and not worry about numbers, skip this part. There are three stats used for these chocobos: Speed, Stamina, and Intelligence. Speed is a measure of km/hour and ranges from 10-100. Stamina is measured as minutes of continuous trotting at 70% of max speed before a mandatory break and ranges between 1-100. Chocobos can also sprint at full speed for 10% of their stamina. Intelligence… will come later, but ranges from 1-100. Check back in a few months for details. Each chocobo has a starting stat for each of these, and a maximum stat for stamina and speed. These stats are determined by the “Class” of the chocobo which go from worst to best “Terrible” (F), “Poor” (D), “Average” (C), “Good” (B), and “Wonderful” (A). So for example, a “Good” yellow chocobo when caught will have a starting speed of 55, max speed of 75, starting stamina of 40, max stamina of 80, and an intelligence of 60. Sadly, you won’t know the Class of a chocobo until you’ve caught it, so the ones that ran away… well, they could have been great or they could have been awful, and you’ll never know. It is possible to achieve “Amazing” (S) class, but only through breeding. If you have further questions on all the numbers feel free to ask for specifics below or in PM. How can I raise the stats of my freshly caught chocobo? Through training, of course! You don’t have to thread this out, and gains will be assumed on your behalf based on time passed. Speed may be raised 1 km/h per week until it is maxed out. Stamina may be raised by 2 points per week until it is maxed out. Intelligence can not be raised by any means in wild-caught chocobos, but may be raised by 5 points over a 6 month period in chocobos you have bred. In the future there may be items/edibles for your chocobos that can be used to raise their stats, so check back in a few months. Woah, wait, breeding? How does that work? Well, when a female chocobo and a male chocobo are both in the mood and tolerate one another… Kidding. Kinda. After you’ve had a chocobo you caught for a month, you may begin breeding them for various results. Maybe you want to breed better stats, or try to get different colors. Maybe you’re going for the gold chocobo. (We’ll get to that in a minute.) All you need is a male and a female, and magic things happen. Chocobos may lay between 1-2 eggs. These eggs take 1 month to hatch, and sometimes the chicks aren’t the same color as either parent. After hatching chocobo chicks then take 6 months to grow into adults, at which point they may be ridden and/or bred. Adult females may be bred once every 2 months, and adult males may be bred once every week but maybe you should look at your priorities if you’re trying to breed a chocobo once a week. ![]() ![]() *insert adorable tiny kwehs and warks here* Statistics (here we go with the numbers again) go as follows: The chick’s starting speed and stamina will be determined by the stat of the lowest parent, and their maximum of those stats will be that of whichever parent has the highest max. For example: Mother stamina - 60 (max 70) Father stamina - 55 (max 60) Offspring stamina - 55 (max 70) Meanwhile the intelligence of the offspring will be RNG between the parents’ intelligence, but remember this can be raised 5 points through training. If you have further questions on all the numbers feel free to ask for specifics below or in PM. Can we talk about the gold chocobo now? How do I get it and what does it do? Gold Chocobos may only be obtained through breeding for now, as only one has been seen in the wild in recent years, and no one has seen her since her involvement in pushing back the chocobo eaters. There are a few dusty old books in the Great McGard Library that suggest gold chocobos are the primest of birds, possessing great speed, stamina, and intelligence, and one suggested in the past they have been seen in the company of mixed flocks containing black chocobos, and those flocks containing gold chocobos seemed very partial to the rare zeio nut, but otherwise little was known. Basically, figure it out. Grander rumors also suggest gold chocobos can run on water and don’t feel hot and cold, but that seems like a pretty tall tale. I’m just here because I’m a Cavalier. Do I get bonuses for being such? Your first big bonus as a Cavalier is a free chocobo, so congrats on that. Please “register” your chocobo down below. The chocobos given out by the guild will always be yellow and will be of the “Good” class. Otherwise Cavaliers do get a bonus in chocobo rearing, but they’re not the only ones. The Job bonuses are as follows: Bard - can sing to lure chocobos without other monsters. 20% catch increase. Cavalier - chocobo training gains increased by 50% with Best Friend skill. Chemist - can make a potion to increase chocobo egg production to 3 eggs without fail. Gourmand - partner with green/black/gold chocobos to find rare ingredients. Freelancer - always catch average chocobos until 5000 exp, then always catch wonderful. Ninja - can sneak up on a wild chocobo with Quiet Steps skill for a 75% chance to catch it Ranger - 50% encounter rate increase with Happy Camper tracking. Scholar - can tell the rating (wonderful, average, etc) of chocobos with Advanced Libra skill before capture. If a Job isn’t represented on this list and you have a suggestion of what their perk should be please feel free to leave it below. How many chocobos can I have at one time? That’s up to you, but I ask you not to go crazy with it, and try to be realistic. If you have a farm, go nuts. If you’re a backyard breeder… maybe try to keep your flock smaller. Like one or two. They’re big birds and they need a lot of space. Boarding at your local farm is also an option. At this time chocobos cannot be sold, and unwanted chocobos will need to be released back into the wild. How does this really work? How do I, the player, set this all in motion and keep up with it? Whenever you’d like to catch a chocobo, submit a form in the “Catch” section below. You’ll be informed which beasts the chocobo appears with (so you can get gil and maybe items), and if you managed to catch it or not. If you did successfully catch it, you’ll be asked for a name for your new friend. When you’d like to breed, fill out the breeding form below and you’ll be given stats for any resulting chicks. Each player is responsible for posting updates on any birds released, gifted/sold to another character, or otherwise lost. When a character exits the game, unless otherwise noted, their birds will be assumed to have been released into the wild, donated to the Cavalier guild, or given to a local farmer. The list of all registered birds in game can be found here. Who is actually running this thing? The event "Bizarre Bird Behavior" and this catching/breeding system were built by a player and approved by the gracious mods of the game |
